The process:

1/ Meet with Donna ~ virtually and/or in person and review:

  • Health ~ past, present, and future needs

  • Lifestyle – preferred activities – indoor and outdoor

  • Personal and Family goals for the project - including finances

  • Discuss your concerns, e.g., safety concerns, mobility, hearing, vision, cognitive concerns, e.g., memory loss, changes in family size, need for intergenerational modifications.

(All services will be conducted while adhering to Dr. Bonnie Henry’s Covid -19 recommendations and using personal protective equipment precautions).

2/ Evaluation of your home and outdoor space (photos/measurements/video).

3/ Written Report ~ The report includes assessment findings, recommendations that are health, safety, wellness, short and long-term recommendations (if needed) and rationale for recommendations. Anticipated costs will be provided upon request.

4/Construction and Post construction phase ~ Donna can help you learn how to safely and effectively operate new installations, innovations, and design adaptations. She will walk you through instructions and practice with you if need be, as new technology, safety equipment, alarms, and/or adaptive devices need to work effectively for you, right from the start. ​​

   

 

 

 

 

 

Frequently asked questions:

When is it the right time to hire Design 4 Accessibility?

  • In the contemplative stage. In the initial phase, the blueprint phase, pre-construction or when looking to purchase a new home. Many people purchase a home knowing they need renovations.

  • When you are worried about your aging parents, having concerns about their ability to take care of themself, and remain safe in the home, at all hours day and night. Maybe they have fallen, or appear confused, forgetful or agitated by their surroundings? Maybe they are at risk of a security breach?

What information is included in reports?

  • Recommendations are based on universal design, optimal ways to promote safe functional abilities, and current research findings will be noted related to health, wellness, and safety.  

Will Donna be able to work with my designers and builders/tradespeoples?

  • Donna will collaborate with any member of your team and family and friends as needed, throughout the full design process from pre- to post- construction. 

 

Donna is not an Interior Designer, as such, she does not select tiles or paint colors but can provide suggestions to help with you decide of features that will promote health e.g. tile sizes and finish, colors that enhance mood.  

What to do about Finances?

Renovations are expensive, that's why we want to get them done correctly the first time. Being on a fixed or tight budget, is a concern for many. Donna can help you by providing you with information on potential sources of funding. 

  • Donna knows of available grants and other funding options. She will value your budget and help you stick with it.  Budgets are necessary and should include contingency funds.
